We all know balancing school and sports can be a daunting task. Especially at the University level. Imagine being able to play a sport without having the commitment of actually being on a varsity team? While also having the luxury of being able to participate whenever your heart desires? Well, lucky for you, Sport & Rec offers drop-in sports that offers exactly that.
There are four streams to drop-in sports. These are field sports, indoor sports, ice and water sports and last but not least, target and racquet sports. Field sports include ultimate frisbee, soccer, jogging and running. Indoor sports include basketball and volleyball. Ice and water sports offer lane swimming, ice skating, as well as stick n’ puck. Lastly, target and racquet sports offer badminton, table tennis, tennis and squash. There are so many options to choose from!
All you have to do is head on over to the drop-in sports page on the Sports & Rec website and click register for sports activities. All of the drop-in activities are free. Once you’ve selected the drop in event you want to participate in, all of the information you will need is stated on that respective page. You will find here where the activity is taking place, how long it lasts, equipment information, as well as time slots that are available for the given activity. Clicking on the open time slots is what will secure your spot. I will admit that spots fill up quickly!
I had the opportunity to check out drop-in basketball and I had a blast! There are two different locations where you can attend drop-in basketball. Either at the Athletic Centre or at Goldring Centre. I chose to go to Goldring only because I am more familiar with this building. Once our time-slot began, the 8 of us who were signed up for this section headed out on to the court, introduced ourselves to each other and got in a quick warm-up. After this, we shot the ball around and played a shooting game together. This took up about half of the time. For the latter half, we played 4 on 4 basketball. This was by far my favorite part! I loved being able to compete in a sport that I’m not all that great at, without being judged in any capacity. All of the other participants were also there to have fun which made the session so much fun. I felt very comfortable in participating in drop-in basketball - so much that I am already planning out which drop-in sport I want to try out next. Be sure to grab your friends and book ahead of time to make sure you are securing a spot in whatever activity you want to participate in!
