Parenting is no picnic, but lucky for parents, there are plenty of resources offering support and knowledge to help them navigate the intricacies of raising a child. One such source is the Parenting Ed-ventures podcast, which aims to empower parents through engaging conversations and expert insights.

Simon Darnell, a University of Toronto professor at the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE), was recently featured on the podcast, discussing his area of expertise – sport for development - and, more specifically, the role of sports in a child’s life beyond the scores and trophies.

“I enjoy sharing my expertise and insights with the broader audience, beyond the classroom,” says Darnell, who is also director of KPE’s Centre for Sport Policy Studies. “Podcasts seem to provide a convenient platform for that.”

Nadine Boer, communication coordinator of Tutor Teach, the parent company hosting the podcast, says they were keen to hear Darnell’s views on how sports can be used to develop social skills, build confidence and even drive social change.

“Simon is without a doubt a leading voice in Canada for the power of sport for childhood development,” says Boer. “His research, in particular the Change the Game report he produced in partnership with the MLSE Foundation, is vital for parents to be aware of and to consider.

“We know that sport is good for children's physical health, but as Simon made so clear, it's so much more than this – and we wanted to help spread the word on how to make sports more accessible and attractive to children – and parents and schools, alike.”

The podcast, available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and iHeartradio, has so far featured experts on a wide range of issues regarding children, families and parenting, including pediatric speech pathologists, nutritionists, occupational therapists and researchers studying the effects of sleep, risky play and excess screen time on children.
